After tracking the WAN market size in 2020 and 2021 with our WAN Market Size Report, we began to think beyond the market as it is today.

What if we could predict what the future of the WAN market would hold?

Good news: we can. (But we make no guarantees on future results, of course, because predicting the future is hard!)

This year, we added in a brand-new feature: the WAN Market Size Report Forecast. This forecast attempts to demonstrate the revenue impacts of the likely sea changes we will experience in WAN configurations in the 2020s.

The update also came with a brand-new Executive Summary of our WAN Market Size Report findings. Here are some highlights:

Key Findings

  • In 2021, MPLS and access loops to MPLS PoPs account for 60% of the global large multinational enterprise WAN market size.

  • East Asia, driven by China, fights well above its weight in global WAN revenue. This is a point certainly not lost on any WAN manager who is tasked with connecting sites in China.

  • MPLS and access lines connecting MPLS ports accounted for 60% of global WAN revenue for the 5,000 largest companies in the world in 2021, but are forecasted to be only 27% by 2026.

  • East Asia will likely remain the region with the largest WAN revenue and will increase that prominence in the next several years.

  • China, the U.S., and India are forecasted to remain the top three countries by WAN revenue over the next five years, but other countries will change their relative influence on global totals.
